Clinical Fundamentals

What is a Hair Transplant?

A hair transplant is an autologous outpatient surgical procedure that moves active follicular units from your permanent donor area (the back and sides of your scalp) to areas showing thinning or recession. Because donor follicles are genetically resistant to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), they retain their growth characteristics permanently once placed into their new location.

At Kezza Clinic, our doctors specialize in Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE), Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT), and Direct Hair Implantation (DHI). We assess your donor density and scalp laxity to select the surgical approach that best supports natural angle, depth, and cosmetic density.

In Short:

  • Autologous Roots: Uses your own live follicles with zero risk of foreign rejection.
  • Permanent Characteristic: DHT-resistant donor roots continue growing naturally for life.
  • Versatile Application: Restores scalp crowns, frontal hairlines, beards, and eyebrows.

Realistic Milestones

Results & Recovery Timeline

Hair restoration requires biological time. Here is what to expect at each stage.

W1

Week 1: Settling & Crust Formation

Mild crusts form around grafts and rinse clean by day 7 to 10 with gentle washing.

M1

Month 1: Normal Shedding Phase

Transplanted hair shafts shed between weeks 2 and 6. Roots remain securely seated.

M3

Month 3: Early Regrowth

Fine, delicate new hairs begin sprouting through the scalp surface.

M6

Month 6: Visible Density

Noticeable density emerges as hair shafts thicken and blend naturally.

M12

Month 12: Final Maturation

Full follicular maturation is achieved, providing lasting aesthetic density.

Medical Note: Results vary from person to person and depend on your hair type, cause of hair loss and how closely aftercare is followed. This information is for general awareness and is not a substitute for a medical consultation.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the procedure take?
Most sessions take 4 to 8 hours, depending on how many grafts are moved. It is a day-care procedure under local anaesthesia, so you stay awake and comfortable and go home the same day. Very large cases are sometimes split across two days.
Is transplanted hair permanent?
Transplanted hair is long-lasting. Grafts come from the back and sides of the scalp, where follicles are genetically resistant to DHT, so they keep growing after they are moved. Your original, non-transplanted hair can still thin with age, which is why doctors often suggest medical therapy alongside surgery.
Why does transplanted hair shed initially?
Shedding between weeks 2 and 6 is normal and expected. The hair shafts fall out but the follicles stay anchored, and new hair starts growing from around month 3. Density builds gradually, and the final result is usually judged at 12 months or later.
What is the difference between FUE, FUT and DHI?
All three move your own follicles; they differ in how grafts are taken and placed. FUE removes follicles one by one with a tiny punch and leaves no linear scar. FUT removes a thin strip of scalp and leaves a fine linear scar. DHI uses FUE extraction but implants each graft with a pen-like implanter instead of pre-made incisions. Read: FUE vs DHI, which is right for you?
When can I resume work and exercise?
Most people return to desk work in 3 to 4 days. Gentle washing begins around day 3, following your aftercare sheet. Avoid gym workouts, swimming and heavy sweating for about 2 weeks; your doctor may adjust this for your case.
Can native hair continue to thin?
Yes. A transplant does not stop pattern hair loss, so hair that was not transplanted can keep thinning. That is why doctors often recommend supportive medical therapy, and sometimes PRP or GFC therapy, to protect your existing hair.
Can beards and eyebrows be transplanted?
Yes. Using micro-FUE, single-hair grafts are placed to fill patchy beards, moustaches and eyebrows, following the natural direction and angle of facial hair.
How is graft requirement determined?
At your consultation the doctor maps the area to be covered, checks your donor density with trichoscopy, and considers hair thickness and the density you want. Graft needs rise with your hair-loss stage. See our guide to the Norwood scale.
Who is not a good candidate for a hair transplant?
A transplant may be postponed or not advised if your donor area is too thin, your hair loss is still changing quickly (common in younger patients), or the cause is a condition such as active alopecia areata or scarring alopecia that needs medical treatment first. Uncontrolled medical conditions also need to be managed before surgery.
Is FUE or DHI better?
Neither is better for everyone. Both use the same extraction. DHI places grafts with an implanter pen, which suits smaller, dense-packing areas and working between existing hair, while FUE with pre-made sites is often preferred for larger sessions. In experienced hands, graft survival is similar.
